Empowering children with hearing loss to listen, speak, and thrive

Our students

Students from birth to age 21 benefit from the programs and services offered by Résonance Montréal. They are integrated into community daycares, neighborhood schools, or our specialized classes, depending on their needs. Most of our students have bilateral hearing loss—hearing loss in both ears—ranging in type and severity. Once they reach school age (4 to 21), the Ministère de l’Éducation may assign a code 44 classification, granting access to specialized educational supports.

However, not all types of hearing loss are currently covered by this classification. Children with the following conditions may fall outside of the code 44 system:

  • Unilateral hearing loss (in one ear)
  • Conductive hearing loss
  • Minimal or mild hearing loss

Despite this, these students still benefit greatly from our services. Without early support, even mild or unilateral hearing loss can negatively impact language acquisition, literacy development, and academic success. Since spoken language depends on regular and consistent access to sound, undiagnosed or unsupported hearing challenges may lead to delays in speech and learning. That’s why we believe in early identification, intervention, and prevention—because prevention is best!
